What is Domain Authority & Why It Matters

Domain Authority Explained

Domain Authority (DA) is a search ranking score that predicts how well a website will rank on search engine result pages. DA scores range from 1 to 10 in our tool (mirroring OpenPageRank's scale), where higher is better.

The metric was originally developed by Moz and is now widely used as a benchmark across the SEO industry. It factors in the quantity and quality of a site's inbound links — one strong link from a high-DA site can be worth hundreds of weaker ones.

How to Improve Domain Authority

  • Earn high-quality backlinks from authoritative domains
  • Get listed in curated directories and resource pages
  • Create linkable assets (tools, studies, guides)
  • Fix broken links and remove toxic backlinks
  • Improve page speed and Core Web Vitals
  • Build a strong internal linking structure

Domain Authority vs Domain Rating

Domain Authority (DA) — Moz

Moz's proprietary metric based on their own Mozscape web index. Ranges from 1–100. Considers referring domains, total inbound links, and spam score. The original and most-cited DA metric.

Domain Rating (DR) — Ahrefs

Ahrefs' equivalent, also 0–100. Focuses specifically on the strength of the backlink profile — the number and quality of unique referring domains. Highly correlated with Moz's DA.

Domain Authority FAQ

What is domain authority?+

Domain Authority (DA) is a search engine ranking score developed by Moz that predicts how likely a website is to rank on search engine result pages (SERPs). A DA score ranges from 1 to 100 — the higher the score, the greater the domain's ability to rank. It's calculated by evaluating multiple factors including linking root domains, the quality of inbound links, and overall link profile strength.

What is a good domain authority score?+

A good DA score depends on your niche and competition. Generally: 1–20 is considered Low (new or thin sites), 21–40 is Average (established local or niche sites), 41–60 is Good (authoritative niche sites), 61–80 is Very Good (major content publishers), and 81–100 is Excellent (Wikipedia, YouTube, major news outlets). A score above 40 is considered strong for most industries.

How to check domain authority?+

You can check domain authority using our free DA checker tool above — just enter any domain name (without http://) and press 'Check DA'. No login or account required. The tool queries a live database of indexed domains and returns an authoritative score instantly.

How to increase domain authority?+

The most effective ways to improve domain authority are: (1) Build high-quality backlinks from authoritative, relevant websites. (2) Fix your internal linking structure so link equity flows efficiently. (3) Create link-worthy content that naturally earns backlinks. (4) Audit and remove toxic or spammy links. (5) Ensure your technical SEO is solid — fast page speed, mobile-friendly, and proper canonical tags. Domain Authority grows gradually over months, not days.

What's the difference between Domain Authority and Domain Rating?+

Domain Authority (DA) is a metric created by Moz, while Domain Rating (DR) is Ahrefs' equivalent metric. Both measure the strength of a website's backlink profile on roughly the same 0–100 scale and are highly correlated, but they use slightly different data sets and algorithms. Neither is used directly by Google — they're third-party predictive scores.

Why is domain authority different from my Moz score?+

Our free DA checker uses OpenPageRank data, which is an independent measure based on publicly available link data. Moz's proprietary DA score is calculated from Moz's own crawled link index, which differs. The scores will be similar directionally but not identical. For a fully authoritative Moz DA score, you'd need to use Moz's own tools.
